While Oklahoma City Public Schools are closed, many in the district are reaching out to help local students and families.

School officials said they’ve served hundreds of families so far and will continue to do this for the next two weeks.

"Anyone 0 to 18, we are feeding across them both a breakfast and a lunch at all of our elementary sites,” said Shonia Hall, director of nutrition for Oklahoma City Public Schools.

Many elementary schools across the city allowed parents and students to drive up and pick up meals for free.

Shidler Elementary is one of the pick-up sites and their principal said they fed more than 250 students Monday and more than 300 so far Tuesday. Some parents said their grateful for the help.

“With the stores having shortage on their shelves of food and stuff, it really helps out the community,” said Moses Branch, a parent. “(It) really helps me as a parent out to be able to know I can bring my girls here.”

School administrators said it’s important to provide these meals for families. For some, it might be the only meal they get.

“We know that there is food insecurity throughout our district and these may be the only meals some of our students have access to,” Hall said.

This is not only an opportunity for the students but also employees. All district workers will be paid during this two-week closure. They’re the ones who hand pack the meals each day.

“It’s also great for our administration and our teachers to kind of see those students and interact with them as they hand those meals to them, just those smiles on those faces,” Hall said.

Schools are serving at 42 different sites around the district. Families can grab their food between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
