Man Sentenced To 25 Years In Prison For Attempted Bombing Plot In OKC
A Sayre man was sentenced to 25 years in prison in connection with a bombing plot at an Oklahoma City bank, the U.S. Attorney's Office reported Monday.
Jerry Drake Varnell, 26, was convicted in February 2019 of one count of attempting to use an explosive device to damage a building used in interstate commerce and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against a property used in interstate commerce.
Varnell was arrested on Aug. 12, 2017 after he attempted to detonate what he thought was an explosive-laden van he parked in an alley next to BancFirst, 101 N Broadway, the FBI reported.
This was part of a longterm domestic terrorism investigation. The explosives were inert and the public was not in danger.
The FBI was notified Varnell wanted to blow up the Federal Reserve Building in Washington, D.C., because he was upset with the government, the U.S. Attorney's Office reported.
