My 2 Cents: Housing Migrant Children At Fort Sill
Actor George Takei, of Star Trek fame, tweeted out Saturday that protesters in Lawton were trying to block Fort Sill from opening a "concentration camp" to put children who came across our border illegally in.
Many were carrying signs that read "Love Trumps Hate" and "Human Rights Matter."
They dredged up the internment at Fort Sill of Japanese Americans during World War II, and Geronimo and other Native Americans in the 1800's.
Takei lived in two such camps.
Dark chapters to be sure, but not the same as the 1,400 kids who are about to arrive at Fort Sill, or the 1,861 temporarily housed there during the Obama administration.
I was there 5 years ago, I walked through the facility while the undocumented, mainly teenagers, were "temporarily" housed there and I found them to be clean, well-fed, some were playing board games, others getting exercise outside.
They were still being detained but eventually almost all of them were released to sponsors or family members in the U.S.
We have no choice, around 50,000 migrant children have flooded across the border this year, an increase of 57 percent, are we supposed to just set them loose?
That would be foolish and would encourage more to head for our border.
I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
