OKC Woman To Purchase Storm Shelter After Being In Saturday's Tornado

An Oklahoma City woman is now planning to invest in a tornado shelter after waiting out Saturday’s tornado in her closet.

“I grabbed my kids and went to the closet and came out after a little bit,” said Oklahoma City resident Susan Hughes.

After a tornado touched down near her home, while another leveled businesses and homes in El Reno, Susan Hughes

is determined to have a safe place to go.

“It hits home, so I think I’m going to look into getting a shelter this week,” said Hughes.

She knows all too well she could find herself in the path of a tornado again.

Her best friend Geri McCreight is living proof.

“It got the house I lived in Lawton before I moved here, and it got me in Moore,” said Oklahoma City resident Geri McCreight.

McCreight says wherever she goes tornadoes seem to follow.

“Probably at least a dozen in my life. A couple times I watched them go right over the house,” said McCreight.

She carries photos of the E-5 tornado that killed 36 Oklahomans and destroyed her home May 3, 1999.

“To me it sounded like I was in a jet engine, I didn’t hear the train,” said McCreight.

Years later she says she remembers the day vividly, falling on her knees and asking God for mercy.

“I had my granddaughter and my daughter in the tub. I just covered them up and laid over them and prayed,” said McCreight.

She says once it was over she and her family emerged from a pile of rubble.

“That's part of my home, it was gone it ripped the garage, it ripped all the houses in my neighborhood,” said McCreight.

On days like Saturday she says turns to a higher power get through what's she survived so many times before.

“I get a little panic attack,

I just kneel and pray,” said McCreight.
