congestion

Nobody enjoys traffic.

However, it’s a fact of life when you’re traveling through certain areas of the country. Predict your traffic patterns to the best of your ability to avoid it, but sometimes all you can do is find a good radio station, take a deep breath and wait it out.

Be prepared for the worst traffic around when traveling through any of the 5 most congested cities listed below.

1. Los Angeles, CA

Does Carmaggedon ring a bell?

Los Angeles easily cracks the list of the most congested cities, as it ranks 6th in the entire world.

Traffic has been a problem in Los Angeles for a long time, which is why moves have been put in place to increase the reach of its public transportation system. Between the 101, Interstate 5 and the 405, you’re going to be sitting for quite a bit if you’re driving through the City of Angels.

2. Hampton Roads, VA

This band of cities in southeastern Virginia cities might not seem like a hotbed of traffic, but in the words of one of its native sons — if you know, you know.

Citing on I-64 waiting to cross over from Hampton into Norfolk can try anyone’s patience. To top it off, the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is often dealing undergoing construction, sometimes to the point of only having one lane open.

The state is working on an expansion for the tunnel, which should hopefully free things up a bit.

3. Atlanta, GA

While cities like Los Angeles are notorious for traffic, they at least have numerous interstate systems to choose between so that you can re-route.

If you’re stuck in traffic in Atlanta, there are fewer options, so traffic will get backed up for miles. To add insult to injury, the city is considering a “congestion tax” in the form of a toll.

Expect to see cities like Atlanta look into intelligent traffic systems and studies to fix these growing problems.

4. Washington, DC

Driving through the nation’s capital is a beautiful gateway to many hot spots along the east coast. However, it can take an incredible amount of time to travel through it, depending on what time of day you’re in traffic.

DC also tops many traffic lists, as the District has the 6th worse traffic in the country and the 18th worst traffic in the world.

5. New York, NY

If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.

New York City traffic has tried the patience of many, as it ranks 4th in the United States. Thankfully for New Yorkers, the subway system is expansive and goes everywhere, and is very much a part of the culture.

In fact, many people in the Big Apple don’t own a car because they can get around just fine on the subway.
