Sen. Lankford Weighs In On Kavanaugh Investigation, Lying Under Oath

In an interview this week, Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford (R) said if Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh lied to Senators, it may not be a problem; depending on the context.

Lankford, who has been a staunch supporter of the embattled federal judge, told NPR’s "All Things Considered" he would view a lie about alleged sexual assault allegations as disqualifying, but a lie about something else like his drinking habits is a matter of opinion.

“People have said, OK, if we can - now that we have them on record for new things, let's try to find new things that maybe we can say, not necessarily lying about, but we have different interpretations,” Lankford said. “If one person says, yes, subjectively, I think you drink too much, and he says subjectively, no, I don't think I was drinking too much, then that's enough for lying and enough to exclude him.”

Lankford went on to say he was offended by attempts by Democrats to figure out whether Kavanaugh mislead the Senate Judiciary Committee in his marathon hearing last week.

“That's no longer a dialogue about sexual assault,” Lankford said. “That's trying to find some way to trip up a nominee, to be able to catch them on something based on some kind of history from 36 years ago. That - that's no longer really trying to be able to get to a judge. That's trying to be able to destroy someone personally.”

The Junior Senator said he doesn't mind an investigation he just doesn't think it'll turn anything up. He also added, so far he doesn't believe one of Kavanaugh’s five accusers, Dr. Christine Blasey-Ford, that it was Kavanaugh who sexually assaulted her.
