A young mother is recovering after her car was targeted in a drive-by shooting. Lucky to be alive, the victim is thankful her kids were not with her.

Lemmons was picking up laundry and giving a ride to a friend Sunday night, when they stopped for gas at the On Cue on Northwest 36th Street. She saw a man she recognized.

“I had just seen him at the elementary where I pick my kids up, but I didn’t think anything,” Lemmons says.

She says he got into a black Nissan with his friends and they left, without exchanging words. When Lemmons left shortly after, she pulled up next to the car at the I-44 junction.

Lemmons says she turned to look at the men once. Then her passenger, David Beasley, saw a green laser light pointing at them through the window.

“There was never anything that made me think when the light turned green and I went to go, that they would start shooting me,” says Lemmons.

Bullets struck her car five times, one of them flying into her body. Thankfully, the two car seats in the back that normally carry her four- and five-year-old were empty. Her boyfriend, Tyler Carter, says, “It looks like if they was in the car, my kids would have almost died.”

Lemmons almost did die. The bullet went through her lung, collapsing it, then lodged next to her heart, where it now remains. “They said if it had been less than an inch over, I would have died,” she says.

Police arrested two 18-year-olds, Darwin Calderon and Jason Zamora, for the shooting, but they did not arrest the man Lemmons recognized. Police records show the third man may have had an ongoing feud with Beasley, Lemmons’s passenger.

As she recovers, Carter is taking unpaid leave from work to care for their children. He still drives them to school in what remains of the family car.

Their friends and family have launched a GoFundMe page to help with medical bills and car repairs.

Carter says, “It’ll take time, but with time everything will heal, you know. It’s just sad.”
