Incumbent Mike Hunter appears to have won the hotly-contested race for the GOP nod for the state’s chief legal and law enforcement officer position.

In one of the tightest races of the night, Hunter managed to secure less than 275 more votes during Tuesday's runoff election, according to unofficial election results.

The race for Oklahoma attorney general was already heated between Hunter and Tulsa businessman Gentner Drummond before Tuesday’s runoff.

Hunter was appointed to the position by Gov. Mary Fallin after then-Attorney General Scott Pruitt was tapped to become the EPA administrator for President Donald Trump’s administration.

Before the primary election, Drummond questioned Hunter’s eligibility to run for office but his argument was voted down by the state election board.

Both Hunter and Drummond faced off in a News 9/News On 6 debate in July where they discussed the implications of the newly passed State Question 788.

Once the results have been verified, Hunter will face Democratic nominee Mark Myles in the general election on Nov. 6.
