The department released body camera footage on Friday of the officer’s arrest. In the video, the off-duty sergeant is seen sitting on a street curb near the intersection of South Meridian and Newcastle Road.

Officer: “How much have you had to drink tonight?”

Ables: “Uh, I had some drinks.”

Ables told the officer he had just left the Whiskey Barrel Saloon, a bar located less than a mile from the crash scene.

Officer: “You mind if I perform a couple tests to make sure you’re alright to drive tonight?”

Ables: “Uh not really. I know I’m. Not really.”

Ables was handcuffed after refusing the tests.

Officers noted he smelled like alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech.

James Homer’s 16-year-old son was behind the wheel of the truck Ables hit.

“Yeah, it’s totaled,” said Homer. “You can’t drive it.”

Homer was also in the truck, neither of the victims were seriously injured. He said Ables appeared intoxicated after the crash but remorseful of his actions.

“He went over there and just sat and said I screwed up,” said Homer.

The 27-year police veteran faces one DUI charge and a charge for transporting a loaded firearm while intoxicated.

Ables is on paid administrative leave and has not yet been charged by the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s office.
