Luther Police Say School Stabbing Suspect Showed No Remorse

A 14-year old girl is recovering at OU Medical Center, from nearly a dozen stab wounds, after she was attacked inside her school by a fellow student Thursday morning, police said.

The suspect is a 14-year-old boy, who has since been taken to the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center. Witnesses reported seeing him lunge at the victim.

“I thought maybe he was just punching her but when I saw the blood, I immediately froze and thought to myself, is he stabbing her?” one student said.

Police were called around 8 a.m. in reference to the stabbing. Luther Public Schools superintendent says the attack happened in the auditorium. Staff were welcoming students back to class from the summer break. 

“Two minutes into the assembly probably, I noticed one student that appears to be punching another student,” said Superintendent Barry Gunn.

He adds, one teacher pulled the student off the other. When the teacher stopped the fight, they realized the girl had been stabbed rather than punched. 

Officers say the boy attacked the girl with a serrated folding knife, and that she was stabbed in the back, right arm, right hand and face area.

The girl, was taken to OU Medical Center via medical helicopter. Her condition is not known. However, friends of the family say she is “alert.”

Luther Fire Chief John Brown commended the school staff for holding pressure on the wounds and keeping the student calm to assist in slowing down any blood loss. Witnesses watched during those critical moments.

“They had her hands around her neck holding places and they escorted her out and was waiting on the helicopter,” one student said.

The police chief told News 9 the boy did not disclose a motive and apparently expressed little to no remorse. At this time, it is unclear how the two teenagers knew each other or why the incident occurred.

“You're going to go ahead and stab an unknown person 9 to 11 times and you have no feeling about it. That's a little concerning,” says Police Chief David Randall. 

Superintendent Gunn said extra counselors are on hand as the high school will continue to hold classes. 

Luther Public Schools passed a policy earlier this year to arm staff, but the policy has not been put into practice since many still need to be trained, Gunn said.
