OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City Police are investigating the death of a two-year-old girl. She was hit by a driver Monday morning in the parking lot of the Mira Vista apartments near Northwest 23rd and Meridian.

Police have not released the victim’s name and no arrests have been made.

Apartment residents were inside or headed out for the day when they saw officers and paramedics at the front of the complex.

“I didn’t realize it was a kid,” said Cassie Walker, apartment resident. “But I saw them loading them up, I think into the ambulance.”

Police said a car driving through the parking lot hit a two-year-old girl. Investigators were told the victim's mother was pushing a child in a stroller and the toddler was walking.

“It appears the mother was walking the two-year-old,” said Officer Megan Morgan, Oklahoma City Police Department. “When unfortunately, the two-year-old ran into the path of a vehicle.”

The toddler was transported to the hospital by EMSA but did not survive the crash. A heartbreaking reminder of how quickly young children can wander away from their parents' side.

“Sometimes she will try to get away from me,” said Walker. “And it only takes a second.”

Walker often takes her four-year-old daughter with her to the bus stop in front of the apartments and has to be extra cautious of traffic.

“She doesn’t understand that’s dangerous and can hurt her,” said Walker. “She doesn’t have a sense of danger at all.”

The young mother does not know all the details of the crash but her thoughts are with the victim's family.

“I feel really bad for the parent,” said Walker. “I want to talk to them later just because I do live here and I’m a parent myself. See how they’re doing.”
