Designed to remind us that not all stray pets are homeless pets, National Lost Dog Awareness Day is a perfect time to take preventative measures to keep pets safe.

As any Oklahoman knows, severe weather season can be a crazy time, but it can be an even scarier time for our pets.

Experts advise making sure your dogs have tags with names, phone numbers and even addresses.

However, there is another option to make sure lost pets find their way back home.

"Pets can pretty much be microchipped at any age. It's similar to a vaccine but with a bigger needle that implants it so it can be done while the pets are awake," said Pet Angels Rescue director Dana Puckett.

The organization, Lost Dogs of America, created National Lost Dog Awareness Day as a way to bring attention to the millions of pets that go missing every year, and to celebrate the more then 42,000 reunions since 2011.

Microchipping your pet can run about $40, but experts say the most important thing to do after getting a microchip is to get it registered. An unregistered chip is essentially a dead end.
