One Broken Arrow 5th grader was surprised with a $15,000 check Friday morning after she submitted a winning recipe.

Maya Jacob, 11, won a recipe contest with Uncle Ben's.

About 500 students submitted their favorite recipe using Uncle Ben's rice and Jacob's recipe for United We Stand Spicy Kabob Rice was one of five national winners.

The prize comes with a $30,000 check for her school, Immanuel Lutheran Christian Academy, to renovate its cafeteria.
"It was a dream come true, I didn't know I would win," Jacob said.

Maya's 'United We Stand' Spicy Kebab Rice

Ingredients:

1 lb. ground lean turkey

1 tbsp. chopped green onion

1 garlic clove, minced

1 tsp. curry powder

1/4 tsp. ginger paste

1/4 tsp. black pepper

1 tsp. black pepper

1 tsp. ground cumin

1 tbsp. ground coriander

1 tsp. smoked paprika

1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper

1 tbsp. canola oil

Rice ingredients:

2 Uncle Ben's Ready Rice Basmati (8.5 oz pouch)

Directions for kebabs:

  1. Mix all ingredients together (excluding canola oil) until mixed evenly.
  2. Shape the mixture into round patties to form the kebabs. You may want to wet your hands before shaping for easier handling.
  3. In a medium-size skillet, preheat the canola oil on medium high heat
  4. Add the kebabs and cook four minutes on each side or until thoroughly cooked.
  5. Remove the cooked kebabs from the skillet and set aside. Also, set aside the skillet. We will use the drippings in it to flavor the rice.

Directions for rice:

  1. Gently squeeze the pouches to break rice apart and pour the contents into the seasoned skillet.
  2. Turn back on medium-high heat and add 4 tbsp. of chicken broth, stirring occasionally until heated thoroughly about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Top the rice with the kebabs and garnish with cilantro and lime wedges.
