One person is dead and two others are in the hospital after a driver attempted to make an illegal U-turn near Bristow.

The crash happened just before 10 a.m. Friday on the westbound Turner Turnpike just part the Bristow exit.

Traffic backed up on the Turner Turnpike near Bristow as crews worked to clean up the mangled mess.

Troopers say a pickup driven by 61-year-old Walter Moore was illegally trying to cut through the center barrier and was hit by a semi.

51-year-old Shoun Scott, a passenger in the pickup, was killed.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

"On the barrier wall of the turnpike, we have openings for emergency vehicles to use,” explained Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Steven Swan. “They are signed, 'No U-turns strictly enforced."

Swan stressed the dangers of these illegal turns, reminding drivers to obey the warning signs.

“People shouldn't be trying to cut the center wall of the turnpike, very dangerous thing to do," said Swan. “As troopers, it's part of what we do; we don't like doing it.”

Moore and another passenger were taken to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition.

Lt. Swan leaving drivers with the following message: “If they miss their exit, they just need to continue driving to get off and then turn around, but they should not try to cut the center barrier wall."

The crash is still under investigation, and there’s no word yet if the driver of the pickup will be cited.
