An Oklahoma murderer's sentence of life without parole is thrown out by a judge Friday. Tucker McGee killed Weatherford teen JaRay Wilson in 2012. Now, her family is bracing for the re-sentencing.
When Tucker McGee was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the murder of 16-year-old JaRay Wilson, her parents felt a shred of closure.
“JaRay can finally rest in peace,” her mother, Jara, told News 9 in April 2015 when McGee was sentenced.
Friday, News 9 spoke with her over the phone after she’d learned about the appeals court judge’s opinion.
“It’s been a hard road since then. I’ve just now – getting to where I have a little bit of where I can even put up a Christmas tree this year. And now it feels like it’s just hit me in the face again and drug [sic] me right back down,” she said.
The judge tossed out McGee's sentence.
The opinion said in part "there was no evidence of important youth-related considerations" during the trial, such as the juvenile's immaturity, the "incompetencies associated with youth" and whether the circumstances suggest the "possibility of rehabilitation."
“He didn’t just shoot her once. He shot her twice and aimed where he was wanting. And he’s a monster and I don’t think he deserves to get out and take a chance of hurting someone else. He needs to stay where he’s at,” she said.
Now, the Wilson family's wounds are re-opened as they prepare to go through the sentencing process all over again.
“It just makes me so mad that now I feel like justice hasn’t been served for her in a way. So now I’ve got to fight again and I’m going to,” Jara added.
It’s unclear when the re-sentencing hearing will happen.
