A student was hit by a car in Broken Arrow Wednesday morning. The student, who was riding a skateboard, is in critical condition, according to police.

Broken Arrow Police said the collision happened in the 1200 block of South Main Street. Police closed Main Street between Mason and Memphis to investigate.

The collision took place around 7:15 a.m., according to Corporal Leon Calhoun. Calhoun said the girl was southbound on Main when she was hit from behind by a southbound car.

A witness told police the girl was riding her skateboard in the center of the street, a news release states.

"There are no crosswalks in the area of the collision as this is not an area of frequent crossing by pedestrians," Calhoun said.

Calhoun said the investigation into the injury collision is in its early stages, but it doesn't look like the driver was speeding. They did not give her a ticket.

Police said it's a reminder to follow the rules of the road.

"Of course, we remind everyone that sidewalks are for pedestrians and roadways are for our vehicular traffic," said Broken Arrow Police Sergeant Keith Cook.

Police said they are not sure where the girl was headed on her skateboard.

Broken Arrow Public Schools issued the following statement:

"Early this morning, we were notified by the Broken Arrow Police Department that one of our students was involved in an auto-pedestrian accident. Our hearts go out to the student and her family, and we will work to provide assistance to them during this difficult time. We are also providing support for our students and staff who are affected by this tragedy. Although the accident did not occur during school hours or at one of our sites, we will continue to provide assistance to the police department as they investigate what happened."
