OU head football coach Bob Stoops met with the media on Monday to discuss the Sooners' win over Kansas State and the upcoming matchup with Texas Tech.

Here are some highlights from the news conference:

On the offensive attack against Kansas State…

“I thought offensively, the balance run-pass throughout the day was great, I thought our effectiveness in running the football really set up a lot of things. Joe Mixon had another huge day all around with the kick returns, throwing a touchdown, receiving touchdown and running. Just all around great day to go with Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook, those guys were outstanding.”

On Texas Tech…

“A tough team to play down there, Coach Kingsbury and his offensive guys have really been explosive. You look at the yards and points they’ve been able to put up has really been strong that way. Mahomes is an exceptional quarterback and a lot of good talented guys to get the ball to.”

On talking with Mayfield about his emotions before returning to Lubbock…

“We’ll visit some. Coach Riley I’m sure will have a strong influence on him and how to handle it and believe he will. He’s not a freshman and just stick to what’s been positive for him and good for him and the way he’s executing why would you change any of that, so hopefully he can handle that.”

On Samaje Perine’s injury status…

“Samaje Perine has a slight pulled muscle, so he will be out at least two weeks, maybe three. That’s going to be ongoing, a running back with a slight pull, we just got to make sure that it heals properly, so that’ll be here for a couple weeks for sure.”

On the play of new starting center Erik Wren…

“Erik’s been solid, really good. He had another good game and he’s been leading those guys with calls and direction and doing well with it. That whole offensive line was really, really solid. I think stand out was Orlando Brown, Dru [Samia] and Ben Powers had the best scores.”

On the evolution of Joe Mixon…

“He’s just an exceptional athlete not just running the football, he has great hands, even returns, great hands out of the backfield. And for such a big, physical guy is unusually slippery with his suddenness to go with the power.”

On how the backfield will adjust without a healthy Perine…

“We’ll pay attention to that here this week, some of the other offensive players who might have a chance. For instance, Dimitri Flowers can also go in and work in there, and Mark Andrews and Carson Meier can go in in his spot. We’ll have to look at things like that.”

On if he tries to get a feel about underclassmen leaving for the NFL…

“Absolutely, we get their grades in usually ahead of the bowl game so they have an idea of what the NFL people think they should do.”

On if the team will be motivated by Mayfield’s return to Lubbock…

“No, I don’t think that’s a very positive form of motivation. Those kind of things to me are sort of negative forms of motivation. The motivation ought to be that we’re still undefeated in conference play and we’re going down to play another good football team at their place at night, we need to be at our best. That’s the kind of motivation you’d hope for.”
