A moving flu clinic is making stops in different towns, helping people get immunized.

The Caring Van Clinic was in Shawnee on Monday and stopped in the Oklahoma City metro on Thursday.

Jenny Koetter is Program Coordinator for the Oklahoma Caring Foundation. She said, “Each year, many children and elderly die of influenza or are hospitalized for it. For some people it can be very deadly.”

Now is the beginning of flu season. Of Oklahomans hospitalized in September, the Oklahoma State Health Department says 3 people tested positive with the flu and 82 with flu-like symptoms.

The Oklahoma Caring Foundation is making the effort to get everyone immunized, especially the kids, with the Caring Van Clinic.

“The services are provided free-of-charge to children that qualify,” said Koetter. Those between 6 weeks and 18-years-old can get a free flu shot if they are uninsured, Medicaid eligible or Native American.

Thursday’s stop was at the Latino Community Development Agency on 420 SW 10th Street in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Yuliana Reyes is the Health Programs Director for the Latino Community Development Agency. “Here, all the Latinos trust us so they’re more willing to come here than to go into a random clinic that they don’t really know about or that they don’t speak their language,” said Dr. Reyes. She said it bridges a gap and lets some people feel more at ease.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health will be releasing the first flu report on Thursday, October 13.
