Gov. Mary Fallin has picked up what some might consider an unexpected endorsement of her support for a special session.

Rep. Richard Morrissette, the Oklahoma City Democrat who terms out of office at the end of the year, is speaking his mind, as he always has and right now he seems to be about the only legislator who thinks a special session is a good idea.

Fallin initially proposed calling a special session last month, not long after it was learned that the state still had about $141 million available from fiscal year 2016.

She first suggested using all the money to help give teachers a pay raise. Her administration is now saying there are several possible options for giving teachers a raise, using some, or none of the $141 million.

They're now saying they could use a special session to divvy up the $141 million in a way that helps agencies hurting the most, like DHS and DPS.

And on News 9 Sunday morning, Morrissette said he agrees

“Governor, call the special session, OK. By the way, your popularity numbers are the lowest of any governor in history, do something about it. Respond to the needs of the people of Oklahoma,” Morrissette said.

Without a special session, that $141 million would get returned equally to all agencies.

The Governor is planning to meet this week with legislative leaders to discuss the possibilities.
