The New Orleans Zephyrs scored five runs with two outs, including two in the eighth inning to break a tie, giving the Zephyrs a 5-3 win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers Sunday evening at Zephyr Field.

The Zephyrs (64-63) have won five straight games, as well as 11 of their last 12 contests. Sunday’s win put them above .500 for the first time since May 4, when they were 13-12.

The Dodgers’ recent slide also continued, as they dropped their fourth straight game, as well as their fifth in the last six games.

Sunday’s game was tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Zephyrs scored the deciding runs, as each team collected a three-run inning earlier in the game.

New Orleans had the bases empty with two outs before they plated a pair of runs. The inning was an inch at most away from ending before the Zephyrs scored. With Destin Hood at the plate, Sam LeCure’s 1-2 fastball barely missed off the outside corner for ball two. Later in the at-bat, Hood singled to left field. Matt Juengel followed with a single to put runners at the corners.

Tomas Telis came up next. He swung through a 1-0 breaking ball, but the pitch got past Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes. Hood scampered home on the wild pitch, giving the Zephyrs the lead. Telis later singled in the at-bat to score Juengel, making it 5-3.

The Dodgers (70-57) couldn’t answer in the ninth inning, as they were retired in order by Jo-Jo Reyes and Austin Brice. Brice got the final two outs to earn his first save.

Reyes (3-2) retired all four batters he faced between the eighth and ninth innings and earned the win.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Zephyrs scored three times. New Orleans pitcher Kendry Flores drew a walk with one out before the Zephyrs reeled off four straight hits with two outs. Hood, Juengel, and Telis all notched RBI singles to give New Orleans a 3-0 advantage.

Going back to Thursday’s game against Albuquerque, each of the last 13 runs the Dodgers have allowed have been with two outs in an inning.

The Dodgers tied the game in the sixth inning in similar fashion, also collecting four straight hits with two outs. O’Koyea Dickson and Charlie Culberson hit back-to-back RBI singles, chasing Flores from the game. Corey Brown followed with a game-tying RBI single off reliever Chris Reed to pull the Dodgers even.

Entering the sixth inning, the Dodgers had scored just two runs over their previous 28 innings combined. However, the Dodgers did not collect another hit the rest of the game after Brown’s RBI single, as the Zephyrs pitching staff retired 10 of the final 11 batters. Outside of the third inning, the Dodgers had three hits.

For the sixth straight game, the Dodgers failed to score more than three runs, and they have totaled just 12 runs during that time. During the team’s current four-game losing skid, they’ve plated seven runs.

LeCure (5-4) lost for the second time in as many outings. He allowed two runs and three hits with one strikeout in his one inning of work.
