An Oklahoma City man, arrested in early July after a shooting on the southwest side of the metro, is facing multiple charges, including domestic assault with a deadly weapon and maiming.

Rufus Nelson, 32, was arrested on July 5 after he allegedly shot his girlfriend in the head while she was driving on Interstate 240 near Penn. Ave.

According to police, the victim was immediately blinded by the gunshot but managed to get the vehicle pulled over and flag down a passerby.

Nelson fled the scene on foot, but later approached an on-duty OHP trooper and claimed someone else had shot his girlfriend.

The gunshot to the victim entered the right eye, traveled through the face across the nasal cavity and exited the left eye. Thus far the victim has undergone two surgeries, but her injuries were not fatal.

Nelson was arrested and booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on several counts: Assault and Battery with a Deadly, Domestic Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon, two counts of Maiming, two counts of Possession of a Firearm after Conviction of a Felony, and two counts of Transporting a Loaded Firearm in a Vehicle. Bond was set at $500,000 on each count.
