Construction has finally wrapped up on Edmond's busiest intersection, and business owners that survived it feel they’ve weathered a storm.

Construction on Broadway and 33rd began about a year ago, to install westbound and eastbound right-turn lanes; install a median on 33rd Street, east of Broadway and widen that area. But the confusing Hodge-podge of orange traffic posts, lane switches and dirt entryways forced a lot of people to avoid the area and area businesses all together.

"Oh of course. A lot of it (traffic) stopped, because around here they just move around. They go around some other street; you know?" said Miney Sue of Zen Asian Dining.

Sherry Clement of Marissa's Room Boutique agreed the construction took a toll on business.

"Other shops have closed down because the people just can't get in. It's very congested and you know you have a little dirt road, people didn't want to drive their cars up on the road because they were afraid their tires would get ruined,” said Clement.

City leaders say, with 65,000 vehicles traveling the intersection every day, the construction was a necessary evil.

"We appreciate everyone's patience. It's been a hassle. And most major road projects are but they finished this on time,” said Edmond City Manager Larry Stevens.

Now, area business owners are hoping the word spreads and they can make up some of the business they've lost over the past year.

"We’re hoping that it will help our business to grow. We just opened this section up a month ago.  And we're hoping that it will bring more people to this area,” said Clement.
