Moore Opens Multi-Million Dollar Park

On a windy Saturday in Moore, dozens gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a park for summer fun that serves as a monument to something much more.

Construction began on the Moore Recreation and Aquatic Center two years ago while the city of Moore was still rebuilding after the May 2013 tornado.

For years, the park was built without a name, until the city decided on the Station. It's a nod to the city's railroading roots, and a look ahead to a community that's back on the right track.

It’s located in Dr. Curtis Berry Central Park, named for the man who sold the 51-acres of land to the city at a considerable discount.

“This serves as a testament to the world that Moore is still here and growing and will continue to grow and prosper,” Moore Mayor Glenn Lewis said before cutting the ribbon.

The park covers more than 100,000 square feet. It's complete with a basketball court, fitness center, an amphitheater and a playground. It also boats a new water park complete with slides and shallow play area.

“It almost made me cry. Because I have been through this community through so many tough times and to come here today and to see this tremendous accomplishment of the people,” Gov. Mary Fallin said.

She and U.S. Rep. Tom Cole were in attendance for the grand opening. Fallin also signed a proclamation

The park cost the city $26 million in bonds voted on by taxpayers in 2012. For those that stood outside to watch the ceremony, the park is worth every penny.

"We drive by it every day and the kids have been anxiously awaiting the aquatic center opening,” Sarah Steelman said.

She and her children attended the grand opening.

“I'm really proud of our city and can't wait to make this a part of our summer routine,” she said.
