Adacia Chambers Waives Preliminary Hearing

Adacia Chambers, the woman accused of killing four people and injuring dozens of others when she drove her car into a crowd at the Oklahoma State University homecoming parade, was in court Tuesday.

Her preliminary hearing was scheduled to happen on Thursday.

At the advice of her attorney Tony Coleman, Chambers waived that preliminary hearing.

Chambers is facing four counts of second degree murder and 42 counts of assault in the October 24 crash. 

Chambers was in court and answered with a clear "yes, your honor" confirming that she agreed to waive her right to a preliminary hearing where prosecutors would have to present enough evidence to convince a judge the case should go to trial.

“After visiting with Miss Chambers at length, we decided it was best to wait,” said Coleman following the hearing Tuesday. “There was nothing to be gained from going forward with the preliminary hearing.”

Coleman has said in the past that a psychological examination showed Chambers was suffering from mental illness. A judge ruled after a different evaluation that she was competent to stand trial. 

Prosecutors have said they have as many as 70 witnesses that could testify in the case and in a statement Tuesday said, "The evidence against this defendant is very strong and compelling."

Some of the victims from the crash were in the courtroom Tuesday. The Payne County district attorney said they were notified of Chambers intent to waive the hearing before Tuesday.

It's not unusual for a defendant to waive their preliminary hearing.

Chambers’ next court appearance is a formal arraignment on May 4.
