A good resume and solid references are not the only thing job applicants need to worry about these days. It turns out your online presence can also play a big role in whether or not you get hired.

Instead of hiding your social media profiles from potential employers, you may be better off leaving them alone.

A new survey of hiring managers found questioned job applicants who didn't post regularly or had no social media profiles at all. However, if you do have a Facebook or Twitter account, you may want to clean it up before submitting your resume.

A report from the "Society For Human Resource Management" finds one-third of companies have disqualified a job candidate in the past year because of the information found on their accounts.

The most common mistakes: Posting negative or inappropriate comments. Also, being tagged in inappropriate photos.

"If you are too negative, too opinionated, it could really come off to some individuals that you could be a problem in the workplace,” said Dawn Fey, District President of OfficeTeam

It's not just job applicants. One survey found 40 percent of college admission officers look at a potential students social media.
