EMSA Extends Offer For EMS Plus Employees To Apply For Jobs

There’s an outpouring of support for more than a dozen EMT workers abruptly laid off after their employer shuts downs without notice.

The metro ambulance workers were left not only without a job, but with bounced checks.

Metro ambulance companies have contacted News 9 to not only express concern for these employees, but disappointment in their treatment by the former owner of EMS Plus, formally Guardian ambulance.

EMSA, the largest ambulance provider in the state has also stepped up to help.

EMT’s and paramedics are the first on the scene in the event of a medical emergency. But for 18 employees, their sirens have been silenced with no notice at all.  

Checks received for time already worked bounced.

“It’s hard to find another job with the same pay and the same hours, and it’s so close to Christmas,” said EMT, Jennifer Terrett.

“We want to reach out to those folks. I feel sorry for them, I feel sorry for the patients that are in those areas, things like that,” said EMSA Operations Manager, John Graham.

EMSA Operations Manager John Graham said their doors are open welcoming these first responders to apply.

“Even if we’re full, we’re still going to make some room,” said Graham. If they’re good applicants, and if they’re going to help us, we’re certainly going to help them.”

EMS Plus in Northwest Oklahoma City ceased operations last week without warning.

“I hope that in a way that he realized that he’s hurting people,” said Terrett. “I’d like to think that he has some type of conscience.”

Officials with the Dallas-based company said it had to close the OKC office because the managers weren't following state guidelines.

“Unfortunately, that has happened on more than one occasion in Oklahoma. We see it every once in a while, and it’s terrible.”

John said they could begin hiring as soon as next week.

“It doesn’t necessarily have to be just EMT’s and paramedics, we want to extend an invitation to everybody,” said Graham.
