Every year millions of Americans have their identity stolen. But the holiday season is prime time for scams and thieves.

The holidays may be the most wonderful times of the year, but with them comes an increased risk of identity theft. So far this year, more than 700 data breaches have been reported. In those breaches, more than 176 million records were accessed.

Wallet-Hub looked at the total number of ID theft complaints per 100,000 residents. They found Oklahoma ranks 20th when it comes to the likelihood of people being a victim of identity theft.

Nevada, Florida and DC are the most susceptible areas, while South Dakota, Hawaii and Maine are the least vulnerable.

Some things you can do,

  • Be cautious of what you throw into your trash this time of year.
  • Put strong passwords and phrases on your online accounts.
  • Beware of free Wi-Fi accounts in stores or businesses.
  • You'll also want to check your bank accounts and credit card statements often.
