Thanksgiving is a time for family, food and even fire hazards. So News 9’s Justin Dougherty went to the fire department to extinguish the chances of your holiday celebration, going up in smoke.
On the daily, fire crews gear up in response to emergencies. On this day, crews are gearing up to prevent an emergency.
"We are approaching Thanksgiving. This is the peak day of the year for residential structure fires. It could be a very bad day for you on Thanksgiving this year and that's what we're trying to avoid," said OKC Fire chief Benny Fulkerson.
So Fulkerson and his crew want to show folks how *NOT* to use a turkey fryer, by blowing up a turkey.
"Hopefully this makes an impression on somebody," said Fulkerson.
Here are some tips for what to do when using the fryer:
Always use it outdoors, never inside your house, garage or on a covered porch.
Set the fryer on a flat, non-combustible surface.
Use Peanut Oil. It has a high flash point.
Don't over fill the fryer.
Make sure the turkey is completely thawed.
