A fire on Halloween night put a Bethany family in danger, but a life saving move saved the day.

The fire started early Sunday morning at a home near NW 48th and Asbury.

"We took our son trick-or-treating and he was a bumblebee," said Kristen Peters, of Bethany.

Peters and her husband Rob decided to dress up, too.

"I thought it would be a cute idea for us to be Superman and Superwoman," she said.

After a fun evening with their 4-year-old son, Landon, the couple settled into their normal routine.

"Went home, got everyone ready for bed and I had to get ready to go to work this morning, totally normal night," she remembered.

Little did she know, her superhero instincts would kick in.

"We were asleep and I heard loud popping noises and loud sounds and I look and I saw our hallway was lit up," she said.

And without a second thought, her survival skills took over.

"I knew we needed to get out and I could just hear all this popping, so my first instinct was to kick the window," Kristen Peters said. "I was just thinking I have to get my family out of this house. That's the only thing that mattered."

Once she kicked the window open, the family escaped with only the clothes on their backs. Kristen Peters' wounds -- stitches in her arm and staples in her leg -- are a reminder of the sacrifice she made to save her family.

"It's devastating, all of our belongings and all I can do is thank God that we're alive," she said.

The family has lost everything, but is staying with relatives in the area until they can get back on their feet. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
