Two small dogs were killed in a house fire in northwest Oklahoma City, early Wednesday morning.

According to the fire department, at 3:35 a.m., crews responded to the report of a house fire in the 1200 block of N.W. 28th Street.  When firefighters arrived, they reported seeing heavy flames coming through the roof, and a living room that was fully engulfed in flames.

Crews said they utilized hand lines and large nozzles mounted on fire trucks to bring the fire under control from the exterior.  Once the fire was knocked down, firefighters made their way inside the structure to search for anyone who may be inside.

During the search, officials said the fire intensified again, and firefighters were forced to withdraw temporarily.  After battling the blaze from the exterior a bit longer, crews were able to get back inside to extinguish the fire and conduct a second search of the home.

No one was home at the time. However, fire officials said two small dogs did not survive the blaze.

Fire investigators responded to the scene and were able to determine that the origin of the fire was in the corner of the living room.  The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.

The loss to structure and contents is estimated to be just over $125,000.
