The newly-crowned Miss Teen Oklahoma City/Tulsa is proud to be turning heads.

She beat out dozens of other beauty pageant contestants and she did it in a tuxedo.

Mattie Witman thought getting nominated for the pageant was a joke or a scam, but the more she thought about competing, the more she wanted to do it.

“It definitely started out as something I would never, ever do,” Witman said.

Witman said she ultimately decided to do the pageant to redefine the definition of beauty.

“I wanted to show that you don't have to wear a dress or you don't have long hair and look super skinny to be what people call beautiful," she said.

Witman had to learn how to pageant walk, then she interviewed in front of judges and competed in the casual and formal wear segments.

She was asked what goal she wanted to accomplish this year and said being in the pageant was accomplishment enough.

“While we are surrounded by beautiful participants, you must look towards how people have differences and that toleration is something that the entire international community can begin to learn, and begin to make strides towards success in society,” she answered during her formal wear competition.

The crowd erupted in cheers.

“It was crazy. I had no idea that I would ever even get to the top 10 and then for a minute, I was like, ‘There is no way I'm going to win,’ and then it happened,” Witman told News 9.  “I was so shocked."

The OU freshman said most of the reaction she has received has been good, especially around campus, but she has had some negative comments here and there.

“People are judged just for being who and what they are and wanting to wear what they want, even if it's at a simple pageant, there is a talent and a victory at just being who you area and having the courage to do that,” Witman said.

The Edmond-native still does not know who nominated her, but she is glad they did.

“If I can change one person's idea about what beauty really is and make someone feel better about themselves, then that's plenty for me,” Witman said.

She plans on competing at the next level of the pageant in December in Florida.

After that next pageant, Witman said she is hanging up her crown and eventually wants to go into international business or security.
