Oklahoma City Animal control is working on two separate cases of severe animal abuse discovered over the past 24 hours.

The first is two dogs who were discovered with gunshot wounds.  The female dog, Lucy, was shot in the face. The male, Dezi, was shot in the back.

A couple weeks ago, the two dogs, likely dumped off nearby, wandered up to a sand mine near 63rd and Douglas.

“We all pitched in and fed them and watered them and took care of them on the weekends when we were off,” described Tony Craine.

Then this week, the workers there noticed both dogs had been shot.

“They looked like they were suffering.  You could see in their eyes they had that ‘help me’ look,” said Craine

So, Craine contacted animal welfare.  Veterinarians say the two dogs will likely be okay.  But animal welfare wants to find the person responsible.  That person or people could face felony charges.

“It is unacceptable to shoot an animal, it is against the law to shoot an animal and leave the animal like this and if we do find the person we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law,” said Julie Bank with OKC Animal Welfare.

Animal control is also looking into what happened to another dog that came in overnight Wednesday, with severe chemical burns on his back. The wounds indicate this was possibly intentional as well.  It will take some time but he will likely be okay, but Banks says he should never have had to suffer in the first place.

“First of all, animal cruelty is never acceptable.  It is not funny; it is not something we take lightly.  It is something the community doesn’t take lightly,” said Bank.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information about who shot Lucy and Devi. If you have any information about this incident you are asked to call 405-235-7300. This is the first time OKC Animal Welfare has worked with Crime Stoppers on a case.
