Local radio station KOMA organized an event Saturday night that brought Oklahoma singers together to honor an historic song.

To mark the 30th anniversary of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie’s "We are the World" charity performance, nearly 50 accomplished singers recreated the performance.

The rehearsal became a reunion for the artists from musical genres ranging from soul to rock, country and opera.

Leona Mitchell, an opera singer from Enid, studied at Julliard and is a member of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. She’s one of the singers who gathered at the Riverwind Showplace Theatre to perform "We are the World."

“It’s just such a wonderful song. It just brings people together and it’s such an uplifting message,” she said.

Now 30 years later, Oklahomans paid homage to that message and style of song they said still rings true today.

“That kind of thing is really helping the healing process of the problems in the world. It doesn’t fix it all but it sure brings people together,” said Gary Good with Gary Good Entertainment.

And just like the original performance, Saturday’s event was for a good cause.

The event was free but they sold T-shirts and food and drinks inside.

The proceeds from that will benefit the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
