The City of Edmond is cracking down on residents with animals. Starting today a few ordinances take effect changing the way authorities patrol pet owners.

Officers are now able to break into a vehicle if it believes it’s in danger from bad weather or anything else.

New ordinances also prohibit tethering animals unsupervised from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Also, the harness and collar cannot cause the animal any discomfort and they have to have access to water and food and shelter while tethered.

The shelter will now hold an animal looking for its owner for 96 hours, instead of three days.

And among other changes -It's now illegal for drivers to have a pet in the bed of a truck unless it is humanely secured and restrained from jumping falling or being thrown from the vehicle.

Edmond officials recommend a tether that is short enough so that the dog cannot move off the edge of the vehicle or even better - a crate that is tied down.
