An Oklahoma City dog is recovering after taking a terrible ride. The dog's name is Diamond. She's a one-year-old mix. And even though she was hurt in such a horrible way, she still seemed happy when News 9 reporter Christy Lewis met her on Thursday.

Witnesses told authorities little Diamond was in the back of her owner's truck on Friday, July 17 as he drove along the 2500 block of S.E. Grand in Oklahoma City.

Diamond apparently fell out and was dragging by a chain hooked onto the back of a tan Ford F-150 driven by 26-year-old Juan Paz.

“There were witnesses who saw this happening and attempted to stop the dog owner. It did take a little bit of time to finally stop the dog owner and get them to stop and recognize what was happening,” Julie Bank with OKC Animal Welfare said.

Animal Welfare’s report stated it took him 2.2 miles to recognize what was happening.

By that time, she was bleeding, her face was gashed, and she had been suffocating. First responders said her nails were ripped off and paws skinned raw.

Paz told police he didn't know Diamond had fallen out. As a matter of fact, he said they were actually on the way to the veterinarian.

When asked which vet, the report said the woman with him repeated, "We didn't do anything wrong."

When pressed further about the vet, the woman presented a phone number which led to the shelter office, the Animal Welfare report stated.

“It might not be against the law, but it’s not OK to put your animal at risk in the back of a pickup truck,” Bank said.

Banks said Diamond did eventually get treated by a vet for her new wounds and several existing ones.

Now, she needs a foster to help her heal and then she'll be ready for a new home.

“Although she wasn’t treated right and was bruised and battered, she’s certainly still a loving little girl,” Bank explained.

Police said the driver was arrested at the scene only for driving without a license.

But OKC Animal Welfare is putting together its case against for what happened to Diamond. Their report states “charges pending.”
