Yukon Residents Warn Neighbors Of Pushy Roofing Solicitors

A Yukon couple is warning their neighbors about roofers, getting a little too aggressive and who may be up to no good.

The Bentleys said they called Yukon police after two men from a roofing company came up to their door, and then tried to come inside through their back door when they refused to answer.

Andrew Bentley said the roofers rang the doorbell and knocked on his door repeatedly.

He said when he refused to answer, they pushed through the back gate and started knocking on the windows and doors in the back of his home on Winnipeg Drive.

Bentley said they then opened the back door and encountered the family's two pit bulls, who took off running after them.

He said his neighbor also tried to chase down the roofers and told them he'd already called police.

Bentley said the roofers had a van with an Oklahoma logo on the side, but a Kansas license plate.

Yukon police caught up with the roofing crew down the street, but they claimed it was just a big misunderstanding.

And police told News 9 this was indeed a legitimate roofing business who gave them proof of their business and customers.

But Bentley said they were up to no good.

“It just didn't add up at all,” said Bentley. “They said that they'd talked to me but they couldn't tell the police officer my name or anything.”

We checked and Yukon police said any roofing businesses that are not located in the city limits must obtain a solicitor permit before going door-to-door looking for roofing repair jobs.

But they said not many of the out-of-town roofers know that.

“We've seen a rise in this problem recently with the bad weather,” said Jenna Robberson with the Yukon Police Department.

Robberson said according to city statute, if a solicitor of any kind comes up to your door in Yukon, they need to have a solicitor's permit, and have them displayed in plain sight. This applies to businesses that are from in town or out of town.

If they do not have that permit, call Yukon police.

Robberson said those who do obtain a solicitor's permit must go through an extensive three-part OSBI background check.

They also have to pay a daily, weekly, or yearly fee for the permit.
