A bizarre accident southwest of the metro leaves one man dead. Police say a woman ran over her husband west of Carnegie in Kiowa County early Sunday morning.

The family says the Chickasha couple had a rocky relationship, and claim Whitney Gonzales had abused her husband, Pete, in the past. They want to know why she was not arrested if she smelled of alcohol after running over her husband.

Several members of the Gonzales family were already in Carnegie for an Uncle's funeral, and now another death.

"He's our baby brother and she's supposed to be his wife. How could she do this?" said Jessica Gonzales.

Jessica Gonzales says her 23-year-old sister in law Whitney sent her a Facebook message around 7 a.m. saying she'd been in an accident and Pete didn't make it.

"And I asked her, I said, ‘Well, who was driving? What happened, you know? Were they arrested? What happened?' And she said, ‘I don't know. I don't know.'"

But Whitney did know and showed up the same time Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) arrived at Pete's father's home. That's when troopers said it was Whitney who ran into her husband 24-year-old Pete Gonzales.

It was around 4 a.m. Sunday on State Highway 9, just a mile and a half west of Carnegie. Pete died on the scene from massive internal injuries.

"They had been arguing and they were fighting and he started walking away, away from where I don't have those details," Jessica said.

Some relatives believe the couple was leaving Whitney's mother's home in Kiowa County, and they seemed fine Saturday night, drinking at a cookout. But somehow an argument escalated to Pete leaving the car and Whitney driving and searching along the highway looking for him, until she ended up hitting him.

Pete leaves behind a 2-year-old and 7-month-old daughter.

"He was the sweetest kid. He was always soft spoken. He was very shy. He had a big heart. He loved his girls," Jessica said.

OHP says the District Attorney could decide the possibility of filing charges in Monday morning.
