Many Oklahomans struggle to feed their families. One program, however, allows eligible families to shop and choose the foods they need.

Like many Oklahomans, Patricia Jackson lives on a fixed income.

"I only get $70 in food stamps," she said.

Having enough food to get through the month was a struggle for her until she found the Moore Food Resource Center.

"The impact that we're making in lives, really you can't measure it," said Tyler Geohagan, Director of the Moore Food Resource Center.

There are seven more facilities like this one within the metro; all affiliated with the Regional Food Bank and its community partners. Through the program, eligible family members can shop at the center once every 30 days, choosing their own food.

"We're able to offer frozen protein, frozen vegetables, fresh produce, milk, eggs and canned goods," Geohagan said.

Around 20 volunteers work at the center, but more are needed.

"All of the work that is completed is predominantly volunteers, so we need a lot of man hours to stock shelves, to walk with clients to shop with clients and really to just meet needs," he said.

This center feeds approximately 583 families each week, providing 80 meals or two weeks' worth of food.

"When you see people struggling, it doesn't matter what walk of life they come from, you know that the need is greater and certainly you feel good doing your job," Geohagan added.

And for people like Jackson, it's a Godsend.

"It helps me you know put food in my apartment and I have food for a whole month," she said.

Seven additional food resource centers are in the works within the metro. To find the one closest to you, call the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma at 405-972-0968 or visit their web site.
