The Edmond Police Department is sending out a warning to pet owners. Police said it's important to make sure your dogs and cats are up to date on their vaccinations.

A skunk that was killed by a dog near I-35 and 2nd Street tested positive for rabies, according to Edmond police. Health officials said rabies infections are almost always fatal once symptoms appear.

The department posted the following warning on its Facebook page Thursday night,

“We've had a skunk that was killed by a dog in town (2nd st & I-35 area) test positive for rabies. This is a good reminder to make sure your pets are up to date on vaccinations.”
