A passerby pulled a man from a burning car after it hit a tree in Payne County Friday night. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers say the driver was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital in critical condition.

The single-vehicle crash took place at 11:12 p.m. on Interstate 35 about 11 miles west of Stillwater, according to an OHP collision report.

David Garibotto Nimer was northbound when his car ran off the road, crashed through a fence and into a tree. The investigating trooper said the car caught fire, and Nimer was freed from the vehicle by an unnamed person before emergency workers arrived.

The 23-year-old Boulder, Colorado resident was taken by medical helicopter to OKC with head, arm and internal injuries.

Troopers don't know his condition before the crash or why his car left the roadway.
