A controlled burn is underway near Lake Stanley Draper, Thursday afternoon.

The City of Oklahoma City Utilities Department scheduled the burn to resume where a November 2014 burn was last halted; about 350 acres between SE 109th St. and Water Plant Rd.

The burn began around noon and is expected to take about 10 hours to complete. Staff with the Forestry Service will be on hand, monitoring weather conditions and say if things change they'll be prepared to put the fires out immediately.

Police officers have been assigned to direct traffic from along W. Stanley Draper Dr., between SE 109th St. and Water Plant Dr.

The burn was prescribed to promote restoration and serve to maintain the native Cross Timbers ecosystem, reduce underlying and overgrown brush and help control the invasive eastern Red Cedar tree population around the lake.
