Some OU students said they are on high alert after at least two break-ins at an off-campus apartment complex.

The burglar hit the complex during Christmas break while many students were out of town.

News 9 was told the break-ins happened over the weekend at Campus Lodge Apartments, not too far from OU's campus.

Dania Maduro said she got a call from her apartment manager saying someone broke into her off campus home.

“So I've been mentally preparing myself for what I could possibly see, and I expected the absolute worst,” said Maduro.

She and her roommate's bedrooms were ransacked and her patio door window was shattered with the screen ripped apart.

“My drawers had been rummaged through, my clothes had been thrown out into my bed,” said Maduro.

Dania, like most of the students who live at the complex, was home for winter break, which made the complex a prime target for suspecting thieves.

“I mean, it's kind of scary, but it's not unheard of. Student complexes are kind of targeted, I mean, It's happened before,” said a neighbor of Maduro. “My old complex got broken in a couple times too, so.”

Dania said the thief kicked in her roommate's bedroom door and took her birth certificate along with her passport and other sensitive documents.

“Most of the damage was then done to one of my roommates rooms. Her door had been locked when she left, but he had broken into it,” said Maduro.

Other than that, she said the only thing missing was a defective Wii console and small amount of cash.

The thief left behind electronic notebooks, jewelry and televisions inside the apartment.

“It was still upsetting to see your door broken and busted open like that, but it's a lot better than it could have been,” said Maduro.

“I mean, it's kind of scary, you never know,” said Maduro's neighbor.

“I think it's crazy,” said student Rui Li, who lives across from Maduro. “I will lock the door every night.”

The apartment manager at Campus Lodge Apartments reassured News 9 this was isolated, and the complex does not have a history of break-ins.

If you have any information, you're urged to call police.
