Another ambulance was involved in an accident over the weekend and Saturday's crash was a hit and run. The drivers of two other vehicles took off and police said they are still looking for a maroon Chevy pickup with damage to the passenger side door.

Just before 2 a.m. Saturday, someone hit the ambulance from behind causing it lose control, spin around, go up on a wall and come back down where it collided with another pickup truck.

“The original vehicle drove off, the occupants of the second vehicle ran off,” explained EMSA Paramedic Operations Manager John Graham.

Luckily, EMSA was not transporting anyone at the time. And the paramedics were not injured. But the ambulance was badly damaged.

This was the second time in a week EMSA paramedics were involved in a crash. On Tuesday, police said a teenager crossed the center line near Edmond Road near Kelly and the ambulance was hit head on.

Not only does an accident take a unit, and possibly paramedics, out of service both in the short and long term, but Graham said ambulances are strategically placed across the metro so when one is out of service because of an accident, it could lengthen the response times for other emergencies.

“When things like that happen, it just disrupts that plan,” said Graham. “We can accommodate it and make changes and modify on the fly as needed but it just kind of throws a kink in the system.”
