Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened at an apartment complex in northeast Oklahoma City, Sunday night.

According to Oklahoma City police, officers tried to pull over a man for a traffic violation at N.E. 28th Street and Laird, but the driver did not stop.

The driver reportedly crashed his vehicle into the gate at the Heritage Point Apartments at N.E. 26th and Kelley.  He then exited the vehicle and began to run.

Police followed in a foot pursuit. Witnesses told News 9 that the suspect stopped running and put his hands up.

However, police said the man brandished a weapon. The officers felt threatened, and that's when they opened fire, shooting the suspect multiple times.

EMSA was called to the scene and transported the suspect to an area hospital.  Monday morning, police confirmed that the suspect has died.

Early reports stated that two people were shot, but police later reported only one person had been shot.

Police have identified the suspect as 39-year-old Jerry Nowlin. Officers said they did find a firearm in Nowlin's possession, along with several grams of marijuana and cocaine.

Right now, two Oklahoma City police officers are on routine administrative leave while the situation is under investigation.
