Taking A Look At The Last Five Bedlams

The past five years in the Bedlam rivalry have been downright crazy with wild finishes and dreams being dashed. The importance and the competitiveness of the rivalry has increased a lot over the years, making the rivalry as a whole much better than the record may indicate. In light of Saturday's matchup in Norman, we're taking a look back at the last five games between the Sooners and the Cowboys.

2009- Norman- Oklahoma 27, No. 12 Oklahoma State 0

The Cowboys came into the game 9-2 and looking to secure a berth in the Fiesta Bowl with a win over the Sooners. Oklahoma State's day in the sun would have to wait, however, as Oklahoma, despite a disappointing season riddled with injuries and inconsistency, denied their rival a chance at a BCS bowl. The OU defense, which had been excellent all year, held OSU to just 109 total yards and completely shut down quarterback Zac Robinson, who finished 9-of-21 for 44 yards and an INT. DeMarco Murray scored twice, but the day really belonged to Ryan Broyles, who had 109 receiving yards and 204 punt return yards, 87 of those coming on his final return for a touchdown, which punctuated the Sooners' dominating win.

2010- Stillwater- No. 14 Oklahoma 47, No. 10 Oklahoma State 41

40 fourth quarter points. 28 points in 92 seconds. That's all you need to know about how nutty this game was. Once again, it was the Sooners playing spoiler, as a win would have given Oklahoma State the Big 12 South title and a berth in the Big 12 title game. Instead, the Oklahoma win forced a three-way tie with the Cowboys and Texas A&M. The Sooners won the tiebreaker, beat Nebraska in the Big 12 title game and then won the Fiesta Bowl. The Sooners did a great job of shutting down the high-powered OSU offense, holding the Cowboys to just 273 yards at the midway point of the fourth quarter. Austin Box's interception and a Jimmy Stevens field goal put OU up 33-24 with 5:53 to play. That's when the craziness began. OSU drove down for a quick score but the Sooners responded with an 86-yard touchdown pass from Landry Jones to Cam Kenney. Justin Gilbert returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and then Jones finally ended things by hitting James Hanna for a 76-yard score. In a wild and crazy series, this game may take the cake.

2011- Stillwater- No. 3 Oklahoma State 44, No. 13 Oklahoma 10

Arguably the high-water mark for the Cowboys in the Bedlam rivalry, 2011 was the year Oklahoma State broke through years of disappointment against OU. The Cowboys dominated all facets of the game and rendered the Sooners completely helpless. OSU trounced Oklahoma so thoroughly that Brandon Weeden only threw for 217 yards and no touchdowns. The Cowboys ran for 278 yards and 8.4 yards per carry through the Sooners' defense. Years of frustration plus the best Oklahoma State team in years—possibly ever—made for a bad situation for the Sooners in Stillwater.

2012- Norman- No. 14 Oklahoma 51, No. 22 Oklahoma State 48

This game had all the back and forth of the 2010 edition, but the Sooners and Cowboys at least had the courtesy to spread it out over the course of four quarters, not two minutes. Oklahoma State had control multiple times in this one, taking a 14-point first quarter lead and an 11-point lead in the third quarter. The Sooners rallied, tying the score at 38 on Jalen Saunders' 81-yard punt return, and again with four seconds left when Blake Bell barreled into the end zone on fourth down. The Sooners won the game in overtime on Brennan Clay's 18-yard score. This game didn't have much impact on either team's season, but it was another chapter in a rivalry that has increased over the past decade.

2013- Stillwater- No. 18 Oklahoma 33, No. 6 Oklahoma State 24

Last year's matchup was just wild. The game altered the course of both teams, both last season and going forward into this one. With a win, the Cowboys would have won the Big 12 and gone to the Fiesta Bowl. The Sooners would have finished with three losses and would never have gotten a shot at Alabama in the Sugar Bowl to create the hype surrounding OU coming into this year. Instead, the Sooners won, defeated Alabama and entered 2014 with considerable hype. The Cowboys instead went to the Cotton Bowl where they lost to Missouri. The game itself had plenty of wild twists, mainly resulting in positive things for OU. The Sooners played three quarterbacks, ran a fake field goal for a touchdown and got a punt return for a touchdown. Still, the Cowboys probably should have won the game. But once again, Bedlam craziness ensued and drastically changed the future of both teams.
