A suspected gunman is dead and two officers are recovering after police said a routine traffic stop turned into a shootout.

It happened just before 11 p.m. on Monday near N.W. 12th and Rockwell. Oklahoma City Police said during the traffic stop the officer asked all four people in the car for their IDs. When he ran their information, he learned one of the passengers in the car had multiple active warrants.

The officer called for back-up officers to come to the scene. When they arrived, police said they approached the car, and that's when one of the passengers stepped out and began firing several shots at them.

"These officers who were at the scene returned fire at the suspect as he was shooting at them and hitting him, and killing him at the scene," said OKC Police Capt. Paco Balderamma.

The driver and two other passengers in the vehicle were detained for questioning. Police said they're also speaking with witnesses.

What is not clear is if the gunman was the passenger who had the warrants. Both of those officers have been treated for their injuries. One was hit in the hand and treated at the scene. The other officer is in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the ankle.

All four officers involved are on administrative leave.

Police have not identified the gunman or the officers involved at this time.
