We're wrapping up our series this week by joining the group in charge of the popular Hefner Canal goats!

Employees with the Oklahoma City Water Quality Division are in charge of taking care of the goats that help eliminate all the weeds and brush surrounding the Hefner Canal on the northwest side of the city.

The program is made possible through a program with Langston University's Goat & Research Extension.

Bobbie Miller, Lacey Swope and Rachel Calderon had the opportunity to help herd the goats, along with Otto the guard dog, and feed them breakfast.

The City of Oklahoma City is replacing expensive mowing equipment by using the goats to practically mow with their mouths.

They work along the nearly six acres surrounding the Hefner Canal near NW Expressway and W. Wilshire Blvd. The city says the herd will help trim back the hard-to-reach grass, vines and other problem plants. They will also help eliminate fuel use and emissions, prevent damage to slopes and reduce brush by 50 percent to 90 percent in the first year and 95 percent to 98 percent over five years.
