Moore Students Get Crafty For The Special Olympics

The Summer Olympics may occur every four years, but the Special Olympics occur every year.

So in hopes of getting their kids to Stillwater to compete, students and teachers at Moore High School have gotten crafty.

The days of the traveling salesman have winded down, but the days of a good old fashion craft show still got people wound up, especially for a craftsman like ‘Nate the Great' who helped paint some of the crafts.

When not painting, he was selling, something that just seemed natural. Because if his wink didn't bring in customers, his sales pitch sure did.

So not to hold him back from traveling Nate and his groupies hoped to raise enough money to send Nate and 16 of his classmates to Stillwater to compete in Nate's favorite event.

"Yeah, I like Special Olympics," said Nate, a Moore High School student.

Nate competes in running, bowling and what's called the ‘turbo javelin.'

"You have to run and throw it...way far," said Nate.

The Olympics are an environment Nate and his teacher Nikki Worthly enjoy together.

"Fun to just get to sit down with them and get to know them and love on them a little," said Nikki Worthly, a Moore High School teacher.

So Nate's singing and his passion for the games mixed together, everyone from interactive children's books to yarn and even plastic nails cashed in on the opportunity.

"It's kind of a win-win," said booth operator Sarah McCorkle.

Some said it was even ‘jam-tastic.‘

"We kind of play off the jamberry," said Sarah.

Business kept Sarah McCorkle busy. So instead of volunteering her labor she just made a donation. All of her profit at the craft show went straight to Nate and his classmates.

"To be able to fund something, to be able to fund different things, I find it very special," said Sarah.

And if that didn't keep Nate singing, then maybe the likelihood he made every salesman jealous with that gold medal smile.

Officials said the craft show is one of the largest fundraisers for the Moore Special Olympics program.

Last year, they raised nearly $1,300 dollars.
