Oklahoma Red Cross volunteers went door-to-door in the rain on Saturday to spread the message of safety. Volunteers talked with more than 100 people in a Norman neighborhood about how to prevent house fires. Red Cross responds to these kinds of disasters most frequently, almost every day.

Red Cross Regional Director of Communication, Ken Garcia said Saturday's event was part of National Preparedness Month. October is Fire Prevention Month. Officially starting in October, the Red Cross will be pushing a national initiative to reduce home fires, injuries and deaths by 25% in the next five years.

All Red Cross regions across the United States are planning canvassing events in areas where officials believe there is a higher fire risk and response. Locally, the Red Cross is starting its fire safety campaign early, as part of National Preparedness Month.

Conversations were held in English and Spanish and volunteers covered topics like escape routes, cooking safety, fire safety and smoke detectors, according to Garcia. Norman residents were also given materials on fire safety, as well as general preparedness tips.

The Norman Fire Department helped with the event on Saturday, installing smoke detectors in homes. The Red Cross provided free alarms and batteries to any residence needing the devices. Saturday, a total of 35 were installed.

The Red Cross is planning additional canvassing events in Norman and Oklahoma City and other communities in 47 counties in central and western Oklahoma. All events will have bilingual volunteers as well as smoke detectors, according to Garcia.
