My 2 Cents: Those Dealing With Mental Illness Suffer In Silence

Like most of you, I was shocked last night to hear Robin Williams had committed suicide.

Like most of you, I was shocked last night to hear Robin Williams had committed suicide.

I was a big fan and so stunned to hear that he was in such despair, he chose to hang himself to escape it.

Last night, I posted on Facebook, "Mental illness is all around us folks. We MUST eliminate the stigma and provide more help and resources.”

It was a simple post, but more than 300 people have commented on it, more than 7,000 "liked" it and almost 150,000 have now seen it on Facebook.

That all confirms for me that most all of us have family members or friends, who've been suffering in silence, ashamed to admit they struggle with mental illness and unable to get the help they need.

Also, that their loved ones tend to isolate themselves and are afraid to talk about it.

There's nothing to be ashamed of. It's an illness, and it can be treated like so many other illnesses we all deal with.

You're not a freak. It's almost never something you've caused, so please tell someone that you need help.

One final note… I guarantee once you admit you or a loved one are living with mental illness, you'll be staggered by how many people, you're around all the time, who will open up and share they're dealing with the same thing.
